Cempasúchil Ritual
Cempasúchil (also spelled Cempazúchitl) - Marigold
Origin: The word comes from the Nahuatl (Aztec) language term cempohualxochitl, which combines cempoalli (twenty) and xochitl (flower), meaning “flower of twenty petals”
At Root.ED Nature School we are deeply inspired by the Legend of Xóchitl (flower) and Huitzilin (hummingbird), a more than 3,000 year old indigenous Aztec/Mexica story about eternal love and a journey through the underworld. This legend is why the Cempasúchil (marigold) is a beacon to ancestors and beloveds during Dia de los Muertos with the vibrant color and honeyed scent guiding the hummingbird of eternal love home.
Thank you to everyone who joined us this week for a tender flower-gathering practice, collecting cempasúchil in intentional preparation for Dia de Los Muertos: A Community Ancestor Honoring and Grief Ritual Nov 1 in Twisp, WA!
As we welcome in this season of autumn we wanted to offer you this Cempasúchil Ritual: A Root.ED Nature Sustainable Peace Practice.
If you weren’t able to join us in person but would like to participate from home, here is a video about our morning together at Refugia Farm, and an invitation to follow along with Cempasúchil Ritual and garland-making of your own!
Deep Gratitude to Sarah Lane for your hospitality and to the land and flowers of Refugia Farm who invited us to gather! We heard your voice and appreciate your generosity of spirit and welcome.
Thank you to our sustainable peace partner Methow At Home for inviting and promoting our Cempasúchil Ritual. Here is your Step-By-Step Guide for how to create your own Cempasúchil Ritual and Sustainable Peace Practice. We look forward to offering more sustainable peace practices for you to do at home or with us here locally in the Methow Valley.
Resting Garden Ritual
Gather with Root.ED Nature School family and friends of all ages as we bring Imelda's Root.ED Nature Garden to rest for the winter season. An intergenerational gathering of human and more than human kin who collected flowers, harvested remaining vegetables, gathered seeds, composted organic materials and nourished the land in preparation for next year's garden. As always, our Resting Garden Ritual was anchored with poetry and song as beloved community members offered creative gifts to the land.
